PrACTicing Stress and Anxiety Management:

How do we HELP individuals achieve the task of Managing Anxiety and Stress as identified in Stage One of the Stages of Recovery?
How do we swap anxiety and stress for serenity?

This HUBLOG offers an opportunity to identify how one might support an individual address the Stage One – Stabilization task of Developing the ART of managing stress and anxiety that is a natural part of the recovery change process.

The SERENITY Prayer:
GOD grant me the Serenity
To Accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can; and
Wisdom to know the difference.

The Serenity Prayer has been a Power-full resource in my recovery process. The ability to practice the ideas of the prayer especially support the Stabilization Tasks and Occupations of Living Stress and Anxiety Management and Learning to ask for help and support.

God grant me the Serenity to Accept the things I cannot change.
The words from the opening of the Serenity Prayer are most familiar. These words can be a model for effective management of stress and anxiety in an individual's life.
If one does not believe in God, Jehovah, Allah, Jesus, or "a deity", one might think of GOD as Good Orderly Direction, Getting Over Denial or
Grace Overcoming Disease.
It is important to understand the difference between what one can and cannot change. An individual creates more anxiety and stress in living by worrying about and obsessing over what one cannot change.

Some things I cannot change are:

My age, who my relatives are, my height.
My childhood experiences, my gifts and talents,
Another person's use of alcohol or other drugs,
Whether the sun will shine,
My employment history,
How others think or feel,
Who forgives me,
Yesterday's lost opportunities,
How much I am loved or feared,
The past.

I found myself adding to my anxiety and stress by not changing the things that I could change.

Courage to change the things I can.

As I was experiencing anxiety and stress, I found it was helpful to identify and name the sources of my stress – my stressors.
As worthy as the people and causes that I was involved with were, I experienced anxiety and stress through my involvement in these relationships and causes.
I discovered these to be a source of anxiety and stress I could change.
I accepted that I am responsible for choosing what occupies my time and efforts.

Some things I can change:
The youthfulness of my Spirit,
Who my friends are,
My hair color, my weight,
My adult experiences,
My achievements,
My character,
My response to the attitudes and behaviors of others,
How I occupy my time,
How I feel and think,
My willingness and ability to act on opportunities,
How well I live,
How I treat my children,
How much I love,
The future.
I appreciated and accepted that I can make different choices.

Wisdom to know the difference.
I practice and suggest to individuals I HELP to take time to think about and document the stressors and anxieties in living.
Apply your wisdom or the wisdom of a trusted partner to these stressors and anxieties– specifically to identify whether the stressor is one that can or cannot be changed. If the stressor is something that can be changed, then choose to change it
