6 Ways to Show You Care for Someone in Recovery

If you are friends, family, or in contact with someone in recovery, there are many ways to be helpful to them for their ongoing journey. The first step is to investigate how to be supportive. Below, we've started you off with some great and powerful possibilities.

1. Say you want to help (LINK: can-support-someone-in-recovery) Written about a year ago, the top way to help, according to David Susman, Ph.D., is to declare that you would like to help the person in recovery, by simply stating, "I'm here to help."

2. Take the time/Spend the time. Set up a weekly (or more) time to head to the movies with them. Maybe hit the coffee shop. Walk in the park and stop and play cribbage (if you know how). There are oodles of ways to show someone you care, simply by spending an hour or two with them.

3. Listen to your friend. Cancel that. Work on actively listening. What does that mean? Actively listening doesn't mean scrolling through Twitter on your iPhone while your pal tries to tell you about their day. It also doesn't mean staring contest level eye contact. It means listening intently, responding and maintaining enough feedback so that the person feels they've been heard.

4. A low-intensity check-in. A check in with your friend doesn't have to be a high-level interaction each and every time. Remember those annoying little pokes you can do on Facebook? Even if no one knows exactly what they're for, they at least show you're thinking of someone. And if you don't have time for a phone call or personal visit, a little poke that says 'hey there,' is a good reminder you're thinking of them. Optional: Send a gif.

5. Hit the right notes. Music has long been known to stir the soul, and more and more it's being used to spur folks toward recovery. 6. Don't forget about yourself. It's really important not to forget to take care of yourself while trying to help out others. Get rest, exercise, connect with other friends, and basically try as hard as you can to maintain your own steady pace in life while lending that helping hand.
