According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Recovery is defined as:

A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential

What are the events that support or fuel a Process of Recovery?

What are the Tasks to be Performed in living or supporting a Process of Recovery?

The SAMHSA Consensus Conference in 2005 defined Recovery as "a journey of healing and transformation enabling a person to live a meaningful life in a community of their choice while striving to achieve their potential."

The 10 Fundamental Components of Recovery include the following principles, events, tasks and ACTivities to be practiced and performed,

  • Self-Direction. Individuals determine their own pathway of recovery with their autonomy, independence and control of resources. Individual are treated as resources, with dignity and respect, in their recovery process. A self-directed recovery process involves what the individual desires and can achieve.

  • Individualized and Person-Centered. There are many pathways to recovery that are based on an individual's unique strengths as well as their unique needs, preferences, experiences and cultural involvements. There are many roads, one journey.

  • Empowerment. Individuals have the power or authority to participate in all decisions that affect their lives, and hey are educated and supported in this process event. Individuals are provided with the tools to empower them.

  • HELP is a HumbleEffortoLearnPower.

  • Holistic. Recovery involves an individual's whole life, including mind body, spirit and environment. Recovery embraces all aspects of living including housing, social networks, employment, education, mental and physical health care and family supports.

  • Non-Linear. Recovery is not a step-by-step process but one based on continuous personal growth, occasional setbacks and learning from experience. Recovery is not a straight-line process to success.

  • Strengths-Based. Recovery focuses on valuing and building on the unique capacities, resiliencies, talents, coping skills and abilities, and inherent worth of individuals. The process of recovery is fueled by interaction and engagement with others in supportive, trust-based relationships.

  • Peer Support. Mutual support plays an important role in recovery. Individuals enCourage and engage others in recovery with a sense of belonging – Wecovery.

  • Respect. Eliminating discrimination and stigma are critical in achieving recovery. Self-acceptance and achieving belief in oneself are vital to a process of recovery.

  • Responsibility. Individuals have a personal responsibility for their own self-care and recovery journeys. It is the responsibility of individuals to identify and prACTice coping strategies and healing processes to create their own improved well-being and quality of life.

  • Hope. Hope is the fuel of the recovery process and provides the essential and motivating message of a positive future. Peers, families, caretakers and others can foster hope,
